For those that have installed it already? Is it better to do yourself or have it done?

Re: Lowrance LSS-1
Its not that hard if you've installed anything before. I did it and im from Texas, haha
I put my SS box in the rod locker in front of the drivers console and the LSS-1 Transducer right under neath the jack plate. Some are putting them on their steppad if they have enough room but i fish alot of stumpy lakes around here so i didnt think that was a good idea

Sounds like you better install it yourself. If a Texan can do it any Californian can do it.TxFishman wrote:I did it and im from Texas, haha

On a Tracker? Might need to do some research on the transducer mounting options. I have seen some heavy duty aftermarket brackets that would be worth picking up. It will probably have to be mounted pretty low on the transom to stay below the water line right?
Re: Lowrance LSS-1
If you search for LSS-1, you should find a post that I did about a month ago. I went into great detail on how I installed it. You should be able to make up your mind then. PM me if you have specific questions after you read post. There are a couple of other post as well.
Re: Lowrance LSS-1
I've looked at the posts related to installation in a Fiberglass ranger, but I've got an Aluminum Bass tracker, and no jack plate yet....so as far as I can tell the Transom mount version of the installation is the only option for me....
1. Transom mount....................acceptable risk
2. Jackplate mount...................N/a
3. Step Mount........................... plausible, but trade a trade off
4. Direct Step mount................ Step isn't big enough
5. Trolling motor........................ Horrible idea for me.
I've got a giant transducer cable ..
I've got a good sized ether cable...
I've got a small ...small...battery cable...
I dont want to put anything in starboard gear locker.
The batteries are both on the port side....
So unless I'm missing something the LSS-1 needs to go under the Single console and I need to find access to power, ground and the mystery yellow wire/switch wire closer than the battery, or extend the power cable.

Re: Lowrance LSS-1
I had my initial install done at Angler's Marine and am quite happy with it. I did the hook up to the 2nd meter myself.

Re: Lowrance LSS-1
I would be putting the box under the console on that boat. You will find an accessory wire that will cover your needs around the fuseblock. Look around for one of the custom SS transducer protector/brackets. I am sure there is something to get you done. That transducer is too long IMO to hang freely from a small standard mounting on that boat.

What did you mean its too long?...to long for the supplied bracket?

Re: Lowrance LSS-1
Contact Scap Cicero at www.TransducerShieldAndSaver.com and explain your boat setup and mounting possibilities. He will likely design his bracket to fit your boat. I recommend calling the phone number on the website as this is a mom and pop business and they are flooded with email traffic for their brackets.
His mounting brackets are not cheap; literally or figuratively. He hand machines each bracket from aircraft aluminum. If you can afford them, they are more than worth it. His brackets provide rock solid mounting and protection for the transducer. He designs his brackets to insure you are mounting your transducer at the proper angle with relation to the bottom of the lake/river.

Marc

Re: Lowrance LSS-1
I have a Ranger 519 and installed it myself. Very easy to do. I had to put the LSS1 Box under the dash against the firewall since I had a fuse box that was located on the wall in the rod box. I bracket mounted the transducer on the transom just below the jackplate, and ran the wire up along my temp probe wire, and wire tied everything together. I next ran the transducer cable through the wire port where all the cables go through. The one problem I did run into was trying to feed the wire through the existing tube along the gunnel due to all the wires in there.I had previously drilled a 1" hole in my storage box on the aft end behind the drivers side and ran the wire through there along with the HDS 8 transducer cable. Sealed that with a rubber grommet. I wired tied those wires under the lip of the box, then ran them down to the access port cover through the gunnel and out through the access port just under the dash. wireed tied everything off.
Next I hooked up the red wire to an open accessory lead and the black to the flat pin connector under the dash. I then connected the yellow wire tothe HDS-8 yellow wire. So now if I want the LSS1 on I press the accessory 1 switch on. The HDS is hooked to the accessory swtich 2. No power is supplied to the LSS1 until the HDS is powered up. That way if you dont want the LSS1 on, leave the accessory switch for the LSS1 turned off. Less draw on your battery during the day.
Hope this helps.

Re: Lowrance LSS-1
I appreciate the help guys....I'm going to complete the install on Tuesday when I get home from work....I work 48hrs straight.
I dont have any open/ unused switches....and will probably need help either extending the power cable to make the battery or finding a sourse in the starboard wall where al the wiring is run.
I'm going to head over to the auto parts store and see if they sell similar four wire cable or have switches.
I also need to buyt the marine sealant, and marine starboard becasue of the stainless steel to aluminum contact.

Re: Lowrance LSS-1
A easy way to wire things is to go to home depo and buy extention cord in bulk off the spool
it comes in 2/3/4/5 wire and is easy to run

Re: Lowrance LSS-1
Great stuff for wiring a lamp in your home. For a boat you need Marine grade wiring. Do it right. As far as wiring location doesn't that boat have a terminal block type of wiring? Attach the LSS power to the same location as the HDS. Make sure each one has it's own fuse and you are good to go.ASD wrote:A easy way to wire things is to go to home depo and buy extention cord in bulk off the spoolit comes in 2/3/4/5 wire and is easy to run

Unless you've done it before, have a pro do it.
Call Jordan or Rick at Anglers, and ask them who they'd recommend in your neighborhood.

I don't know anything about installing electronics, but I used to have a Tracker 175, and I do know the transducer has to be down on the lower step. Otherwise, it won't read at speed.

Lowrance LSS-1 install
If you want someone to do it for you there in Modesto, give Bob's Marine a call. They do very good work and stand by the work that they do. This the slow time of the year so you can get in and out fast.

Re: Lowrance LSS-1
Ok. I finished the install. I was able to connect to power, ground and even the awake/sleep yellow wire at the fuse box.
I added a switch near my fuse box to turn off the structure scan.
I put the transduce on the back next to my skimmer transduce....hoping all went well....I'll have to wait til Friday to test it.

Knew you could do it! You're from California!!!!
Now remember to fish when you are out running around with that thing. You will be so amazed at what you see you will be fixated by the screen instead of your fishing rod.

Re: Lowrance LSS-1
I ended up having the unit installed in the starboard side rod locker. Under the dash may get wet .......

Re: Lowrance LSS-1
Yeah, for me under the drivers console was the best option as it had immediate access to power and the existing HD7...if it can get wet...It can..but its also next to my fuse box...so either way I'm toast if it gets wet.

I'd be spraying that thing with the hose while it's under warranty. I remember my Humminbird days with those crappy mounts getting tested on Lake Mead. My son and I speared one and it ripped that console unit right off and left it floating. We just turned around and fished it out. Test complete.

Re: Lowrance LSS-1
I wouldn't try it with my LCX-113. I think they are a little heavier than the Humminbirds.
I doubt the metal mounting on the Lowrance will come apart like the plastic Humminbird.
