Knot question - Braid to floro and/or Mono

Post by Lugnut »

I am thinking of putting braid on one of my dropshot rod/reel combos. Up until this point I have only used braid for throwing Frogs and Punching. But the thought of minimal line twist, gets me very happy.......My question is when it comes to a knot. I will be connecting braid (8lb. or 10lb.) to floro and sometimes mono (6lb. or 8lb.). I am looking for EASY and STRONG. Right now I believe the Surgeons Knot fits the bill. Any other suggestions, and or tips?

You might want to search this forum for some more 411 on this subject because I know it's been asked before, not to be rude.

But I personally prefer the double uni knot. As long as you don't go short on how many turns to do on each side you can't get much simpler and once you've tied it a few times it gets quick in no time flat. Remember, more turns on the braid side then the flouro side.

Another one that Bill Siemantel showed me that I like because it's more streamlined is the double albright. I'm still trying to practice it so I can be quick at it.

That's my 2 cents.

I've been using the double uni but when I'm hung up, it breaks at the knot every time, not at the hook. I just found this one that is reported to 100% and goes through the guides better. I gonna try it.

Albright knot. Pretty easy to tie and super strong. I use it for my braid to fluoro connections in saltwater. Caught tons of big Reds, Snook, False Albies, Cobia, Jacks, Tarpon, etc etc etc on it...and of course Bass!

The current knot wars champion is the Albright knot with an average 13lb break strength, but Alot of guys use the double uniknot about 10lb break strength.

Ive got all my setups done with braid and tie on leaders as needed. I use the tony pena knot and have had great success thus far. Its a little harder to tie using the lighter leaders but once you get the hang of it its awesome. Do a search for it and theres lots of how to diagrams and videos on how to tie it.

for drop shotting use a swivel. You'll have a lot less line twist.

I have been using the double uni for about 10 years and cannot remember a single failure.
