Hook Removal
My brother got himself hooked by one of the barbs of a treble hook yesterday. Can anybody explain how it could have been removed with a piece of fishing line. I saw an article on this a couple years ago, but have not had to do it, THANK GOD.
Re: Hook Removal
#1 push the point thrue and pinch it closed with some plyers then back it out.
#2 push the point thrue and run some line under the barb to fill the gap the back it out.
#3 In the ER they will push it thrue and cut the hook below the barb the back it out

Re: Hook Removal
pplace a piece of mono around barrel of hook ... push eye of hook down flat to skin and then yank on mono. comes out easy without much pain . more fear than pain
Re: Hook Removal
I learned how to pull out imbedded hooks with fishing line from a friend of mine.
Years ago, I was fishing with my friend and his wife at Clear Lake. She only fished occasionally and never with 3 people in a boat. We told her that she needed to make overhead casts but she forgot. She made a sideways cast and proceeded to put a size 4 single hook into meaty part of my forearm. The barb of the hook was imbedded about 1/4-1/2 inch into my arm. My friend took a length of fishing line and pulled the hook out of my arm with very little pain and we went back to fishing.
His process:
-Cut the hook off the line if you can.
-Turn the imbedded hook so that shank of the hook was perpendicular to the arm.
-Push the eye of the hook until it was laying on top of my arm.
-Loop the fishing line around the curve of the hook and made sure the line was laying against my arm.
-The "pull" was a single quick jerk. When he pulled, he made sure he dragged the line against my arm.
-The hook popped out with very little pain and blood.
I've had to use this procedure several times for single and treble hooks that weren't imbedded too deep. I don't recommend this procedure if the hook is deeply imbedded or close to blood vessels/critical part of your body.

Re: Hook Removal
Watch the tendons if you use the mono pop removal method.

Re: Hook Removal
What Burke said. The most painless way to do it. Make sure the victom turns there head away so they do not jump. Cut all the other hooks off first. Use a quick snap.

Thank you for all the info. I hope that I do not ever have to use it, but I now have a copy of it in the boat.

Re: Hook Removal
Be careful when you jerk out the hook. Fishing lake Peris years back, windy day went in early cleaning boat when we noticed 4 or 5 guys standing around a boat when over to see what was going on, yep hook in finger they were just jerking it out when the hook when flying right into a guy standing behind them pass the barb in his arm. Had to do it all over again.
Make one cast for me.
Re: Hook Removal
I remember surf fishing and some guy walks right up next to me
and throws a ball for his 100 lb Labrador. The dog immediately gets
hooked and is freaking out. We calm the dog down and I removed
the hook. All my line is still laying on the ground. Once the dog
was free the guy again immediately throws the ball. Hook is still
in my hand. Fishing line around the dogs feet. The initial jerk put
the hook all the way through my thumb. I remember looking at it
saying to myself that "that is going to hurt." The hook went all
the way through the thumb and the barb was sticking out the
the middle of the nail. I only had a few seconds to ponder my
situation when the dog ran out of slack and tore the hook and
my thumbnail right off my finger.

Re: Hook Removal
True story. It healed up but took a long time. When it came to understanding his
surroundings this guy was limited.

He's got a new video, this time filmed in his garage when he really did stick himself in the finger. Trying to get it on the .tv site soon.
