Questions regarding Structure Scan

Post by Robchik »

Could I run DownScan on a bow unit while fishing, or does it require you to run at a minimum speed?

I have put Structure Scan on the trolling motor and it works great. The way you say "bow unit" and minimum speed are you still talking about a trolling motor location or something else. I have acquired readings up to 10 MPH before my boat wants to get up on pad and the turbulence disrupts the signal.

Sorry let me clarify. I'd like to get an HDS7 or 8 for the console to run the Side Scan and an Elite 5 DSI or HDS 5 to run up front using Downscan, but I'm not sure if it needs to be running at a minimum speed to get a clear picture.

Let's say you get an HDS 8 for the console. Then get a Structure Scan unit to plug into the back of the HDS 8 so you have left and right scanning and down scan. This module can be linked with an HDS 5 up at the bow but you will be looking at the picture that the LSS-1 transducer that is on the back of the boat is showing. If you get an HDS 5 and want to see the left, right and down views under the trolling motor then you will need an additional Structure Scan module, power cable and transducer for the front. The Elite DSI on the other hand is a stand alone unit that has GPS and sonar. The GPS antenna is internal and when you plug the transducer into the back of the unit, the only sonar picture you will get is the Down View sonar. There is no left or right scan available and there is no traditional sonar available. Check out this link to learn more about the Elite DSI.

As for the speed question, there is no minimum speed needed to get a picture. Just like the traditional sonar shows the bottom even if you are sitting still in the water.

Save for an additional couple months and get the HDS 8. There are lots of advantages when you go from the 7 to the 8. The 8 has shortcut keys at the bottom of the screen that saves alot of time. On the 7 you have to hit menu and go through those button pushes to get the same results. The screen on the 8 can be split into 4 panels where you can have two screens for the structure scan, one for the traditional sonar and one for the chart, for example. The 7 can only be split into 2 panels so you are limited on the views to use to understand what is around the boat.

Bottom line, it's worth the extra money to go from the 7 to the 8.
