new boat have prop question...

Post by BassNDucks »

I just got a bass boat. Its a 96 Ranger 461 with a 175 mercy efi. What prop should I put on it for best top end performance. Pitch? It has a four blade 23p. Thanks.

a 3 blade prop same pitch will give ya a few more mph top end but you'll give up more control in turns and getting on plane will take a bit longer. a 175 efi on a 461 with a 23p prop if the motor is positioned for max speed you should max out on glassy conditions to mid 70's. Heck how fast do you wanna go? I owned a 98 with the same equipment and there were guys who wouldn't fish with me after I upgraded to your boat confiqiration (to scary fast). It should be a little squirrely at full bore!

Sorry but I doubt that setup will even reach 65 mph!

I did not mean to offend you, it was actually pointed at fishinman claiming 75 mph with that setup.

To get the setup right you will have to have, mph reading at WOT, Rpm and we will need to know the prop shaft height. ( the vertical distance from the bottem of the hull to the centerline of the propshaft when trimmed level to the bottem of the hull. You will also need to know what the water pressure is at Wot. The 23 is probally pretty close. A reworked Bravo will perform the best on that rig.

You won't go wrong with a 25P tempest, great out of the hole and with the right height on the motor you can expect to see 65+ top end Don't be afraid to set that motor up about the 2nd or 3rd hole but that is something you will have to toy with a bit as your load is a major factor in how it preforms. The 400 series hull is one of the fastest most stable rides ranger made, and the 461VS is a rocket in its own class. Have fun but be carefull your gonna get an awesome bow lift but it does get a bit squirrly at WOT
Any day on the lake is a great day

A Ranger 461, As I recall has a taller transom Height than most stock transoms. If the motor is raised on the stock transom without a jackplate the boat will porpoise. The 175 Merc EFI redlines at 5800 rpm if I remember correctly.
You may be able to pick up a small amount of performance by going up one inch in pitch. The Trophy 4 blade will make it easier to drive. The Tempest might be a mile or two per hour faster.
4 blade props give more transom lift than a three blade. The three blade will give more bow lift. If you decide to go to a jackplate I would only recommend a 6" setback. If you have more questions give us a call and ask for either Phil or Chris. We can fine tune your prop for optimum performance.
