If you vote for giant squid you have to eat it, too!
Re: Largemouth vs. Smallmouth vs. Spotted vs. Giant Sea Mon
Gotta luv fried squid!

Re: Largemouth vs. Smallmouth vs. Spotted vs. Giant Sea Mon
I thought when we eat it it's Calamari and when we fish for it's Squid.

Re: Largemouth vs. Smallmouth vs. Spotted vs. Giant Sea Mon
I gotta go with the 15 lbs. Largemouth
That would be a state Record up here in WA

Hey Nico
Thats pretty funny, reason being because as you know Humboldt squid were common for some reason off shore this year. I was on the phone to my buddies from the coast trying to convince them to go on a trip for them. One friend jigged up a few a time or two, but unfortunately I never made the trip. Man, Id love to have fresh calmari steaks for a few months!!
But alas, I voted for the 15 plus, we all have our thresholds.

Re: Largemouth vs. Smallmouth vs. Spotted vs. Giant Sea Mon
I did the math on each of these fish and this is what i came up with:
15lbs Largemouth is 67.4% of the World Record 22lbs 4oz
7lbs Spotted Bass is 68.1% of the World Record 10.27lbs
7lbs Smallmouth is 58.6% of the World Record 11lbs 15oz
an 8lbs Smallie would be closer to the 15lbs Largemouth...
but, I still would go for the Largemouth, but would take anyone on any day.

I went for the smallie, because 7 pounds would crush the six pound barrier where I am at. And plus, it would piss off my friend by whipping his personal best smallie at a little over six.

That was a really tough choice though between the big spot, sm, and lm. I don't think a 100 little spots is going to win.

Hmmmm. Well now....
Great thread BTW. If you mean from now on, well of course, I love my big Largemouths. But I've already caught four Largemouths of 15 lbs or more, while my PB Smally is only 5.7 lbs. Some might point to that and say, "SEE, big Smallies and Spots are tougher to catch than big Largemouth's"..... but I disagree. I point to the fact that I have spent many, many thousands of hours chasing big Largemouths, and a very small handful of hours, chasing big Smallies.
I have to agree with Andy G though. A 7 lb Smally would crush my goal of a 6 lb'er..... then I could get back to the 15 plus Largemouths
.....errr.... an 8 lb Smallie ? Decisions, decisions
So anyway, I voted for the the 7 lb Smally.... but only for my next individual trophy catch. Not from here on out.
Peace,
Fish
Then again, I here those Squid are awesome fighters !

Re: Largemouth vs. Smallmouth vs. Spotted vs. Giant Sea Mon
For the record, the 11lb 15oz fish was disqualified by the IGFA due to lack of evidence. The current record is 10lbs 14 oz. So these are the updated percentages...
15 lb largemouth = 67% of record weight
7 lb spot = 68% of record weight
7 lb smallmouth = 64% of record weight
And by the way, I'm no biologist, but if the giant squid get enough votes I think we might consider stocking them in Folsom lake

It has come to my attention the old record was reinstated. I stand corrected.
Re: Largemouth vs. Smallmouth vs. Spotted vs. Giant Sea Mon
Gotta go with the largemouth. I have already caught a 7 pound Spot, and have had a smallie right at 6 pounds, but my best Largemouth is still just under 10, so that would be more special to me. Never caught a squid, but I bet they would be fun too

But hey Nico....
you didn't say which one you voted for ?
Oh, and yes, you are correct.... the 11-15 Smallie was reinstated. Probably the right decision, but darn, as if 10-14 was not high enough to shoot for as it was !
Just playing really.... a 7 would be great. And an 8 would be bombastic !
Peace,
Fish
