going from 520c to hds7 ?

Post by kane-o »

i currently have a 520c on the bow and a 28hd on the consol, i just got a hds7 and want to put it on the bow and get rid of the 520c. my question is do i need the yellow cord to attach to my 28hd and what would that do ? and will my current transducer's work on the hds7, i have my units interlinked, with a 3000 gps puck... so can i just swap out the hds7 for the 520c, with the same wiring ? i will be getting the lss-1 soon.... thanks guys

To keep things simple for the most part, you don't need to change out the power cord. Just make sure that the NMEA cable in the old LMS 520 power cable is NOT hooked up. Be sure the end is taped up so it won't touch anything under there. The fat cable of the three cable power harness is the one that powers the unit and the plug that plugs into the back of the unit is the same. The only suggestion I would make is if you are going to sell the 520 to someone else to re-coup some $, then replace the three wire power cable with the two wire cable that comes with the HDS unit. This way the new guy with the 520 can hook up the unit AND power his NMEA backbone through the head unit. A two wire cable will work with a 520 and you can power the NMEA backbone by installing a power node. This must be done if you have two HDS units as the NMEA backbone cannot be powered through the head units.

The transducer that you used on the 520 is the same one for the HDS 7, no change needed.

The HDS unit has an internal GPS antenna so you can leave the default setting in the GPS settings for "this unit" and you will get a GPS signal just fine. The 3000 will still be needed for the LCX 28c HD to get a GPS lock.

The ethernet cable can be used to share waypoints but so does the NMEA network. Sonar data can be shared between units with the ethernet cable. You can use one transducer for both units if you want to. Personally, I wouldn't use the ethernet at first. Maybe later add it to see if you find it helpful after you get used to the HDS menu's and the different look of the Pages along with all the other differences from what you are used to with the LMS and LCX units. But, as you learn the HDS unit and start to see the differences between the LCX 28 and the HDS 7 I'm confident that soon the 28 will be for sale.
