Is there that much difference that I should buy the pod type. The instructions that came with my new HDS8 say they recommend using the pod type, but show installing the skimmer glued to the bottom.

Re: Skimmer vs Pod - Through Hull
The only difference between these two ducers is the outside housing, the internal parts are the same. The only concern with using epoxy to glue a skimmer type ducer into the bilge area of a boat is to make sure that the transducer is parallel with the bottom. It can't be tilted to one side or the other to get consistent readings from the bottom of the lake. I have glassed in skimmer ducers before and it can be done with ease, just pay attention to the attitude of the ducer so you will be happy with the results.

Also keep in mind the temp will be reading from inside the hull with a skimmer type transducer. The best solution is to use the pod type with a remote temp sensor pigtailed into the transducer. Many dealers will swap transducers. If you aren't concerned about temp, the skimmer will work fine in the bilge.
