Despite high winds and 4-6 foot rollers in the upper basin, the USAC Nevada Trail December event welcomed a competitive field of 18 Pro-Teams to Callville Bay Marina, Lake Mead.

With water temps between 56 and 60 degrees, anglers took different approaches on filling their livewells, shortly after the scales closed; we had a chance to talk to the Pro-Teams to see how they caught ‘em. USAC Pro-Team Angler Paul Hemsley said “We caught all of our bass on the deeper bluffs in around 40 feet of water, we even caught a bass in 80 feet today.” Doug Gaskill, who caught the tournament’s big fish of 4.94 lbs said “Matt (Warner) and I caught our bigger fish in less than 10 feet of water”.

Despite late day engine problems and thanks to the assistance of fellow Pro Angler Brent Becker by bringing their fish to weigh-in, it was the team of Derek Yamamoto and John Mackey who took first place honors with 13.35 lbs, despite not cashing in on any of the Big Fish money the duo took home $1,390 in cash.

Second place went to Pro-Team Joe Raftery and Tom Martin, the team brought 11.25 lbs to the scales. Despite missing Big Fish money by only six hundredths of a pound, they managed to earn $630 for their efforts.

Third place went to Pro-Team Matt Warner and Doug Gaskill, weighing in the tournament’s Big Fish of 4.94 lbs they managed 11.08 lbs with only 4 fish, the team took tome $755 in cold hard cash.

Fourth went to the new Pro-Team of Larry Gilchrist and Ray Arbesu, amazingly they managed a whopping 9.69 lbs off of only 3 fish! Their fish were impressive to say the least, look for more to come from this new USAC Pro team. Larry and Ray took fourth place and second Big Fish honors and walked away with $310.

There’s no doubt about it, Lake Mead is pumping out quality fish and anglers are licking their chops for this year’s spawn USAC tournaments.
