GMC Sierra Brakes Last

Post by skandy »

I have a 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 which just turned 144,000 miles and I still have the original brakes. I have them regularlly checked when I have the tires rotated and there is still plenty of pad remaining. Never had any problems, no squeeking, chatter, etc. I've never had another vehicle with brakes lasting this long.
Anyone else have this type of longevity with their brakes?

I have a 2005 Chevy Avalanche with disc brakes and I just rolled 160k miles on the original brakes.

At least half that mileage was also towing my Lead Sled... a Ranger 521

04 gmc sierra with 65,000 miles and 60% brakes left! unbelievable right! my truck is a 1500 and really the brakes are kind of "soft" so I use my engine brake a lot especially when towing. I'd like to change them to the equivalent of a 2500HD braking system. Anyone ever do this? or have any ideas on beefing them up? I've always said I want to wait until they need to be changed but that might take forever but i hate throwing out good pads.

We have Tahoes (same brakes) in our fleet of police vehicles at work and get 100k on the brakes. Great brakes for a half ton.
