5 over 20 at WON BASS Casitas 4/12

Post by Rich Tauber »

Cool overcast skies with absolutely no wind greeted 28 teams for the sixth tournament of the season on the WON BASS "Casitas Region" tournament trail. Not only did the cool temperatures concern the anglers but an influx of birds and shad showing up in shallow water Wednesday afternoon and into Thursday morning definitely through a new twist in the puzzle. Veterans Larry Elshere and his son Eric know the power of relating to birds at Lake Casitas and went to work with a variety of big reaction baits to put together an amazing sack of bass weighing 23.18 pounds and captured victory at Lake Casitas. During a post tournament video Larry and Eric explained "If the boat was setting in 4 feet of water you were way too deep". They sat in one spot fishing 1 to 3 feet of water and caught over 40 bass without moving the boat. Using a variety of big reaction baits they reported seeing schools of 5" shad swimming through the zone in less than a foot of water at Lake Casitas. With the victory Larry and Eric collected $1,850.00 in cash and moved into third place in the 2014 Anger of the Year race. In second place was the current leader in the Angler of the Year race Brian Evans and his partner Matt Newman as they put together a 22.64 pound bag of bass and collected $970.00 in cash for their days work. In third place where the "Hammering Hagens" brothers Ron and Chris as they put together a five bass limit weighing 21.23 pounds and collected $620.00 in cash. In fourth place was the team up Dave Romanus and August Kinney as they put together a 21.02 pound bag of bass and collected $1,115.00 in cash for their days work. Rounding out the money list was the team of Mark Mitrany of Ojai Angler fame and Keith Covey of Worldwidefishing.com as they fished shallow breaking fish in less than 2 feet of water and put together a 20.14 pound bag of bass and collected $200.00 in cash for their fifth-place finish. Once again Lake Casitas showed its power in Southern California as every team in the top 5 had at least 20 pounds of bass. The next tournament on the WON BASS "Casitas Region" tournament trail is April 26. Anglers interested in fishing this event can call or text tournament director Rich Tauber at 818-439-1154.
