has anyone used the universal transducer on a motorguide for a front HDS gen 2 sonar?

I haven't and I haven't talked to anyone who has. From my experience they work OK but not quite as much detail as the dedicated Lowrance ducer provided with complete HDS unit packages.

Well i hooked up hds gen 2 to the stock intergraded transducer on my motorguide and the result is less than perfect for sure. Im not sure if im missing something on the adjustments but its just nothing like my other unit> Looks like i have to run a cord down the trolling motor after all!

Since each new model of sonar includes changes and upgrades, unless you have the latest transducer that is made for that model you run the risk of not being able to use all the newest features.
So a separate transducer, one that is for that particular model, makes sense.
Plus, transducers have a finite life, whether mounted to the TM externally or internally. An internal transducer will eventually fail, and at that point you either go to the external unit, or replace your TM.
