Dobyns 744 vs 735 vs others

Post by Steve-o »

Im looking for a 7 -7.5 foot rod.
I need something with good backbone mainly used for a 3/8-1/2 ounce jig rod, possibly cover as a frog rod and texas rig, weightless senko rod. .
Im not sure if i want 7'6. Thoughts on differences and advantages.

Dobyns champ 735c is an awesome frog rod that would double up for a jig rod. Or the extreme 745c if you are looking more as a jig rod that can work for frogs. Both have a little tip which you need for both applications.

the heaviest power rod you'd likely wanna use for a weightless senko would probably be a 4 power or a Heavy power. id imagine it would be difficult to cast a weightless senko very easily with a 5 power or mag heavy. with such a sturdy backbone. So for a weightless senkos as well as light to medium texas rigs, you might need two different rods. So one rod for heavy jigs/pitching/flipping/frogs, and another for texas rigs and weightless senkos would be my guess.

The Dobyns 735 Champion is light and powerful with a surprisingly sensitive tip. It is a GREAT frog rod for sure. You can absolutely double up its use as a jig and Texas Rig rod. It may be a bit much for weightless Senkos but you certainly could use it in a pinch for 6 or 7 inch (i.e. heavier) Senkos on Clear Lake or the Delta.

If you can go with two rods, pick up the 744 Champion Jig Special for your jigs and Senkos. That is a sweet, sweet rod and you won't be disappointed. It is probably even more versatile than the 735 but would be a tad bit under-powered for Kermit.

Enjoy, Craig Gottwals.

The 745 Champ. Extreme is my favorite rod. I throw the senkos on the 784, but love the 744 as well. I definitely throw the 6" senkos with ease on the DX 745. In my opinion, its better to have an overpowered senko rod than an underpowered jig rod!
