Unsolicited Fishing Report - SHASTA LAKE

Postby ash » Mon Jun 05, 2017 12:51 pm

Yup,

I am going to post like we did back in NCBF days and give up the goods on what I found on Lake Shasta this past 4 days and I dont care if it pisses some people off

First off the lake is fishing a little later then typical for this time of year. The water temps are at 74-77 degrees on the surface and the lake levels are high with water clarity varying and Sacramento Arm had the cleaner water 6-8' visibility. We had temperatures of 92-94 over the last 4 days at Shasta and the lake was full of chewing fish.

Believe it or not there are still fish spawning on the lake, although you wont see beds on the bank they are in about 10-12' and there but are few and far between. I am not going to spill the beans on where and what but they are catchable but you're going to have to work at it.

LOTS of post spawn fish and the top water bite has not fully turned on to that wide open spook bite, but it was improving as the days progressed. Best Spook bite was around that bigger shad 3.5" shad. If you're not on a bait ball your probably not on active fish. The big girls are starting to chase trout on the outside we saw and chased boils over 145' but didnt connect they were not staying up for long at all. Wind blown points on the main lake and Sacramento Arm kicked out the bigger fish and the spook bite was turning on more in the afternoon then morning.
I did buy a new rod for this trip and that http://dobynsrods.com/rod/683c/ Dobyn's Rods 683c (yeah I like em shorter) for the spook was just amazing! This rod is perfectly balanced feeling nice and light in my hands all day and i didnt have the fishermans claw or sore forearms from throwing the spook and ripbait for 4 days strait. Well worth the money!

RIP BAIT - I couldn't put it down the Rip Bait in Ghost Minnow was by far my most consistent bait, popping it on a slack line and longer pauses resulted in rods being yanked out of your arms. Again if the bait wasnt balled up or fish active, I moved but I could catch rip fish damn near anywhere up there.

Jig bite is coming on in that Tnt SBm green pumpkin copper flake, tipped with a green pumpkin double tail grub. Points and clay were the ticket.

This is an awesome fishery we have with 60+ fish days and culling 15xs per day the lake is full and the Eagles are soaring if you havnt been up in a while do yourself a favor stop by Phils Props talk to Parker and go fish Shasta.

TL;DR fish a spook for big fish, fish the ripbait under them and keep moving until you find the big bait balled up or fish working em.

I don't know why this would piss someone off. Especially on a lake like Shasta where there's lots of room and lots of fish. Thanks for the report.

This site used to freely and openly share detailed information. Over the years as it has grown guys started getting pissed that someone would give up the goods or that poachers would bang up the lakes.

I think it's good to encourage anglers on what's going on where and get on fish

Fawndale Lodge and RV Resort is boater friendly. Plugs for your boat right in front of your room. Kitchenettes and good air conditioning. Clean and friendly. Close to all the Marina's and launches.

Dude,
good report! I agree about giving up info and helping each other out. There are plenty of lakes up here to fish and plenty of room for everyone to enjoy a day out on the water. You want to come and park it next to me on a spot and have some fun...hell yeah....let's do it! (well, not in a tournament of course 8) I like the shorter rods as well....they help since I am only 5'7"
Keep it up buddy.

A group of 18 of us was on Shasta for 4 days mid May and I agree the bite was crazy. 50 fish days were common. Most of our fish came on soft plastics with the Ned rig being the bait of the week. Color or jig weight did not seem to matter as long as it hit the water. Fish were from the bank out to 15 feet or so. Some fish also came on rattle traps. Not much top water for us.
