Shallow Running Crankbaits

Post by monte300 »

Hey fellas and gals. I fish the Delta exclusively and my main two baits are lipless crankbaits and Speedtraps. I prefer to fish the rocky banks more than tule berms and I'm looking for your opinions on good reasonably priced shallow running crankbaits. If you don't mind breaking it down to cold water and warm water choices? I'm just out there for fun and I never fish tournaments. The weeds are killin me, but I realize no grass = no bass. When I first started fishing the Delta 30 years ago there were very few weeds and some 13" fish that weighed 3/4 pound. Thanks in advance!

The BDS 3 in Spring Craw - its a little pricey but it catches toads. Believe it or not the Strike King KVD Square Bills in the 1.5 & 2.5 - just change out the hooks (I have not yet tried the 4.0) and for getting down a little deeper the Bomber Model A - change out the hooks. These along with the two that you mentioned for the most part fill up my Delta Arsenal. Also too Dan's Delta Outdoors in Oakley http://www.dansdeltaoutdoors.com/ he has a large selection of Crankbaits that are great on the river, including BDS 3 blanks and custom painted stuff. If you are ever in Oakley you owe it to yourself to stop by and say hi to Dan.

Truth is there are days like many others where they just wont chase that crankbait down and you need to get down to them that's where that TnT Wadda Jig comes in to pull out and fish a bit deeper along those same areas you were getting crank bait fish, I am sure Dan can hook you up with some too!

Thanks for your help, Ash. One of the reasons I don't fish tournaments is I would simply be donating my entry fee. I'm only on the water about 5 hours once every two weeks and when I am on the water I want to fish the way I want to fish. I know I would be a better fisherman if I were to slow down and fish techniques I'm not that crazy about. The Delta is one of the few places I can force feed them the way I want and manage to catch a few fish, sometimes lots of fish with an occasional big fish.
