WTB: iRod Fred's Magic Stick / Dobyns 766 rod or equivalent

Post by MaverykeH »

Hey everyone,

Im looking to buy a rod that will be my "braid rod". Something I will use as a all around braid application.
Ill be throwing frogs, big ploppers, jigs, flipping rigs around heavy (ish) cover, and on occasion throwing smaller glide baits and swimbaits (<2oz) with a mono leader.

The two rods that have really caught my eye are the iRod Gensis II Fred's Magic Stick, and Dobyns Sierra Series 766 Flipping' Stick.

Im really hoping to get one of those, but I am also open to other suggestions that will fit my application wheelhouse.
Budget is 180 or lower.

Thanks in advance!

Fred's Magic is ok but i don't think it would be ideal given the techniques you listed, I previously owned 2 and didn't love them, they're a little too stiff IMO. They also have pretty small guides which can be an issue for your mono leader assuming you're using a fairly heavy lb test...the Dobyns 766 would be good for flipping but for an all purpose braid rod i don't know if it has enough tip for the other techniques. I would check out something like the Powell 765CF MAX3d or the new endurance. They're lightweight and super comfortable to fish with. It's a super versatile rod that should cover everything you listed and is within the price range. Not necessarily ideal to cover the full range of techniques you listed, but surely more than capable. Just my 2 cents.

Awesome, thank you for the info! Ill look into that one and see what I can find. Ive never used Powell Rods before, guess I hadn't considered them as an option.

I've got a Genesis II fred's magic stick, used only once or twice. I would consider selling it but i'm in san diego. Unless you're local, with shipping, it might be just around as much as ordering one from TW.
