Minn kota talon power draw?

Post by Bassjunkie17 »

I couldn't find anything on the web regarding this.
Does anybody know how much it draws?
Had an engine fail to start and i think its due to deploying the talon too often.

Its a 12ft talon...no bluetooth
Engine is a 150 pro xs

What do you have for a cranking battery? Size, type etc! What electronics are you running?

Thanks for the response.
Didn't think that was needed....not really troubleshooting....jus curious about the talon.
If it helps...
Optima bluetop d31m
Hds10 on dash
Hds 8 on bow
Both gen 1
Hydrowave h2

I think thats it.

the talon draws 30+ amp's to start.

you need a bigger battery.

If its in your budget, go with a Northstar Group 31 AGM battery. Its expensive and heavy, but its a beast of a battery!

Yea....i was considering that one or the odyssey.
Thanks for the tip.

Back to the original question.......
Im no electrician but if it draws 30+....wouldn't it blow the 30amp fuse?

Not neccessarily. I believe it has to have a 30 amp breaker, but I think the amp draw is a bit lower. Minnkotaman would likely know for sure.

Forgot to ask, do you have a battery cutoff switch installed in your Talon setup? I've heard that they can draw power while the boat is sitting and drain your battery.

the talon draws 30 amps to overcome the 2 locks that hold it up.
once running it drops to 5 amps.
minnkota has a web page for the talon or read the owners manual.
but if you blow the fuse there is a problem.
you just have too small a battery or are using it to much
for your crank battery to recharge.

So I have a similar setup. Helix 9 and 10 and 2 talons. I've been thru 3 group 31 batteries. They keep failing to crank after only a few deployments of the talons. I'm with you I think they draw to much power and are killing my crank battery. I also have an issue where they will deploy or retract and kill my depth finders. I'm about to put them on a separate battery. I've written minn kota and that is there suggestion.

Wow....that's excessive...3 batteries?
Do you have a battery switch?
Because the talon draws when not in use or storage.

I’m having a similar issue but I don’t have the talons. What could be draining my cranking and electronic battery after a few hrs on the water?
