Xiong & Sierra win on Lake Kaweah (CVKF Opener)

Post by MKA »

On Sunday, February 10th, the Central Valley Kayak Fishing (CVKF) circuit kicked off on Lake Kaweah with a random draw team tournament. With another storm moving in the weather was nasty. Only 14 anglers (7 teams) decided to brave the conditions and see what they could put together on what would be a tough day on the water.

The weather reports were calling for rain and wind up to 15 to 17 mph. Ultimately, the wind was over 20 mph that created rough conditions including white caps on the lake. At noon it began to hail and that chased several anglers off the water. A few teams decided to stick it out for the win.

When the day was done only 3 teams submitted scorable fish. The team of Lee Xiong and Yair Sierra brought in 3 fish for a total of 42 inches. Their big fish went 16.5 inches and was caught by Lee Xiong of Merced, CA. Lee reported that he only caught 2 fish all day and his partner landed one. The Neko Rig was the ticket for Xiong. He caught his first fish at 9:00 AM in 30 feet of water and the second fish didn’t come until the afternoon with 1.5 hours left in the tournament. The second fish was caught on the same bait in the same depth.

For their efforts, Sierra and Xiong were crowned the 2019 CVKF Lake Kaweah Team Champions. Congratulations on the win and much respect for battling the weather conditions and sticking it out until the end.

For all the anglers who braved the fierce weather conditions, my hat is off to you.
