John Myers 2019 MKA Motherlode Series Lake McClure Champion

The 2019 season opener for the Motherlode Kayak Angler (MKA) Series was held on Lake McClure on Saturday, 3/23/19. 59 anglers braved some tough weather conditions and were rewarded with nice limits for their efforts. Steady rain and a significant temperature drop (in the low 40s) made the fishing more challenging. The water temperature was 55-59 degrees. Water clarity ranged from muddy to 15 feet. The sun finally broke through the clouds around noon and the anglers were able to dry out and warm up before weigh-ins and awards.

When they started checking in their fish it was easy to see that it was going to be a tight race. Anglers reported catching their limits on underspins, ned rigs, shaky heads, senkos, and dropshot in 10 to 30 feet on points and in cuts in the creek channels. The big fish showed in up a big way with 5 fish that exceeded last year's 18.5-inch big fish (23.25, 19.75, 19.75, 19.25, and 19 inches).

John Myers of Atwater, CA was responsible for the 23.25 inch, 7.97-pound largemouth and an impressive 52.25-inch limit that catapulted him to the top of standings. John is a long-time big boat tournament angler in the Motherlode Region. This is his second season on the kayak scene and he recently commented that his goal was to someday win a kayak tournament. With this win, John has qualified to fish in the 2019 MKA Classic on Kelsey Bass Rach on 6/22/19.
