This is why boat insurance companies should require anyone operating a boat have both a license, and insurance, just like a car or truck.Jboutfishn wrote:BWI Stupid. I have seen it many times, boat goes in, beer comes out.

How does a license stop this from happening?

Through the educational process of obtaining a license. It probably never will stop it entirely, just like a driver's license won't completely stop DUIs. But as it is right now, there are probably many boaters who do not realize that a BWI carries the same ramifications/penalties as a DUI. A license (and threat of loss of same), and the penalties associated with the violations of the license provisions would quite probably deter a lot of irresponsible behavior.jg wrote:How does a license stop this from happening?

I agree. They think that just because they aren't on a road or highway, it's OKJboutfishn wrote:BWI Stupid. I have seen it many times, boat goes in, beer comes out.

Plus requiring that a licensed and insured person operate a boat reinforces the idea of personal responsibility, and the consequences of irresponsible behavior. Having your license suspended or revoked, and having your insurance become much more expensive, or even be canceled, are real life consequences that will force parents to monitor their kids behavior on the water, too.Stratos278 wrote:Through the educational process of obtaining a license. No parent would just hand over the family car's keys to a kid without a license and insurance.
It should be the same for boats.
