When you’re trying to win a bass fishing tournament, and the bite is super tough, “style points” are really not a priority, as the only thing that counts, is that you have more weight than your competitors.

And it was just that way of thinking that helped journeyman anglers Rick Rush and Brad Trimble capture first place honors in Saturday’s season finale for the Future Pro Tour’s central valley region, as they chose to "stay put", and win with a small limit rather than "going big" and risking it all.

Embracing the grind

The team explained that their winning pattern was both a grind as well as a battle of attrition, as they spent all day in only one spot, on one sloping point, and only moving to reposition the boat.

“It took a ton of discipline to resist the impulse to move and look for better fish”, Brad explained to the crowd at the awards ceremony. "Rick got our big fish during the first 15 minutes of the day, and we then proceeded to catch a string of 2 pounders throughout the day”. We felt what we had might get us a top 10 finish, be we never guessed it would be enough to win”!

Brad and Rick's "stay put" philosophy paid off, as they used Daiwa Elite Series rods for dropshotting and A-Rigging in 15-20 feet of water, to find their 11.50-pound limit and take home $1,825 in cash for the win.

Congratulations Brad and Rick!

Classic Time!

The event marked the end of the season for the FPT's central valley region, as next up will be the 17th annual Future Pro Tour Classic Championship, which will be held in March of 2020.

Only 45 teams from this region will compete for the keys to a new Nitro/Mercury package expertly rigged by Gone Fishin’ Marine of Dixon, along with all the glory that comes with the honor of being considered the best amateur bass fishing team in the west!

We wish you all happy and safe holidays and look forward to seeing all qualifiers at the FPT Classic!
