8 inch hudd advice

Post by Riley201dc »

I was looking to start throwing 8 inch hudds and I am looking for a rod. My buddy had a dobyns 806 he is willing to sell me for cheap. I was wondering what your guys thoughts were on the 806 for the 8 inch hudd. Also any rod recommendations if the 806 isn’t a good choice? Thanks

The 806 is a great rod for the 8” Hudd.

What model? Dobyns Fury is a completely deferent rod then a Campion series. Huddleston ROF 5 is diffrent weight then ROF 16. 8" Hudds fish heavy wet and ROF 12 is OK with RF806 is OK the DC 806 is a better choice.

While I've thrown 8" Hudds on both the Dobyns 806 and 807, I prefer throwing the 8" Hudds with a jig hook on the 807 for better hook sets. The Butch Brown rigged 8" Hudds are fine with the 806, but again the little stiffer 807 works better on the jig hook IMHO.

Dobyns doesn't offer a 807 Fury.
Okuma GS A series XH works OK for 8"Hudds.
IROD 8' XH swimbait rod is good for $150.
Hook sets depends on your hook setting technique; reel set and firm rod sweep works with heavier top hooks and added stinger hooks or treble hook glides, I never rely on a rod only hook set becuase you can't take up enough line on long cast swinging the rod without cranking the reel.
The Fury FR806 SB with 25-30l lb Copoly ot FC line should be OK, the ROF 16 maybe a little heavy when wet, 30 lb line and reel set with firm rod sweep will penetrate the heavy top hook.

Another great option is the Spiralite Maverick 8'3 Heavy (1.5-8oz lure rating) rod. Great rod for handling large swimbaits and the butt section is telescopic so it can fit in any 8ft rod lockers. Great rods for a great price at only $125.

If you’re fishing with the standard jig hook (my preferred method) then the 806 is a little underpowered IMO. It’ll work but it’s just not really ideal. The 807 model is great for hudds. IROD Bailey swim is perfect. You don’t need to go overkill with the rod but it should be stiff enough in the tip to pull that big jig hook through on the hookset. And when you set, set hard.

Another Vote for the DC807. Fury 806 is a little light. Great S Save 200 rod tho.

I like the fact that the iRod 804 has a removable handle and is only $149.99. The Air Model SB rod is $249.99

There are a lot of options out there. The ones I have used are a Loomis 8ft Salmon rod, a Falcon Cara swim bait rod, a Dobyns 807, and a Low Down Custom rod.

Reels I use a Daiwa Luna 253 and a Shimano Calcutta Conquest.

For me, I try to find a rod that will cast that bait the best. A rod that handles the bait easily lets me fish with it longer.
Since I fish it with heavy braid and a short 25" Sunline fluoro leader, I get good hooksets even on long casts, so I can opt for a rod with a little softer action, as long as it handles the bait.
I would suggest you find someone who has the rods you are interest in, and ask them to let you try casting them.
Many pro staff members will do that gladly, because they want to sell their line of rods. Mike Birch has let me test drive several Powell rods I was interested in, even though I wound up not buying them.
If you contact the rod manufacturer and ask them, they can probably provide you with a local member of their pro staff who can help you.
