2019 Classic hosts final day on a lake less traveled

One thing Future Pro Tour anglers can always count on is that their skills will constantly be tested and that they will always be made to face challenges that will help them develop into the well-rounded anglers many strive to be.

For at the tour’s inception - in 2003, at the very first FPT “Classic Championship”, anglers were made to face an exciting - yet challenging two-day, split-venue showdown on bodies of water from totally different sides of the spectrum - Folsom Lake, and the California delta.

And fast-forwarding 17 years past that first Classic event will see the tradition of “challenge” continue on, as the 2019 FPT Classic event, held in early March of 2020, will place it’s qualifying anglers in the ideal environment to challenge their skills, as the 2019 Future Pro Tour Classic Championship – presented by Gone Fishin Marine of Dixon, will AGAIN take place on two bodies of water totally different from one another.

The California Delta, and the SF bay area’s San Pablo Dam Reservoir will play host to the 2019 Classic Championship showdown dubbed “Battle By The Bay”, as only 100 qualifying teams (a combination of the FPT’s central and northern regions), will have the opportunity to compete in a 3-day “FLW style” elimination event, with only 100 teams competing day 1 and 2 on the California Delta and hosted by Tower Park Marina.

On day 3, the final day, the field will be reduced to only 15 teams, who will compete on San Pablo Dam Reservoir, a beautiful bass-loaded impoundment located within sight of the Bay and Golden Gate bridges, near the town of Orinda.

Those that know….don’t’ tell
San Pablo aka "Lake X" will help provide the most even playing field possible for final day qualifiers
San Pablo aka "Lake X" will help provide the most even playing field possible for final day qualifiers
San Pablo Dam Reservoir is for certain a lake that is well off the beaten tournament circuit path, making it the ideal candidate for final day qualifiers to put their skills to the test. But don’t be fooled… although it is a lake less traveled, San Pablo Dam Reservoir is home to some absolute MONSTER largemouth and spotted bass, boasting a lake record of 18.78 pounds!

Deep and shallow - in just the right places, it is heavily planted with tons of rainbow trout, providing bass, in this extremely low-pressure impoundment, continuous opportunities to gorge themselves and get huge!

In addition, the lake will be shut down from the public between Nov 10th and February 8th, which will serve to create the most even playing field possible for Classic qualifiers.

A word to the wise…have both swimbaits and A-rigs ready!

Having doubts about San Pablo Dam and it’s big bass potential? Click on the video link below, featuring Nick Smith of Informative Fisherman fame, and top western pro Jason Borofka who fished and filmed on the lake during the same month the 2019 FPT Classic will take place:

Which team has what it takes to face and overcome this unique and epic “Battle By The Bay” and enter the Future Pro Tour’s Hall of Fame as its 17th pair of undisputed Classic champions?

Never fished San Pablo but it looks like fun. But here is the deal Two days at Tower Park The top 15 after that have to travel through the bay area find safe a place to stay (because they just qualified the day before) Looks like at least a few hours. rig stuff for a lake that is different than the delta. Then there is prefish. They should hit San Pablo at least once just incase they make the top 15. I could go on but bottom line this is not very fisherman friendly but life of a wannabe bass pro is not an easy road. ( 2 cents )

It seems like traveling to lesser known lakes and quick practice times are a part of the skills and real life of being a professional bass fisherman. It's probably a good representation for a junior circuit before the real major league pro circuits and good thing there are a lot of different types of circuits for those that want the choice of this or those that want to sit on one lake and compete there every time. Lots of choices no matter what people want.

I don't get how this format prepares somebody to be a Pro. First, are there any Pro circuits that hold a single event on two bodies of water? Second, it's a team event not a Pro type event. Somebody help me understand :|

I guess my point is there are lots of lakes closer and alot easier to get to than san pablo from tower park. It will be a pain in the a$$ for the top 15 to get through the bay area and be prepared when they qualify the evening before. Camanche Hogan Pardee folsom. Hogan would be a good choice right out of Valley Springs Not many derbys there . Pardee if it is open then would keep it fair.
