Winter is time to catch a double-digit bass at Clear Lake

The few bass fishermen out on the lake are enjoying some very good action. The major problem is a lack of fishermen. On any given day there are only a few boat trailers in the parking lots.

The good news is that there are some nice bass being caught. On Sunday one fisherman reported catching several bass in the 3-5 pound class and he said that 3 pounders were common. Casting a square-billed crankbait has been the top fish catcher. Drop-shotting a Senko or plastic worm has also been very successful as have jigs. One fisherman reported having success casting an Alabama Rig.

Of course, jumbo minnows have been very successful. Bass are being caught all around the lake with some of the better areas being the docks along the Nice-Lucerne shoreline, Glenhaven and around Rattlesnake Island. Soda Bay has also been a good choice as has Henderson Point. A few bank fishermen have been catching bass off the docks at Library Park in Lakeport and along the shoreline at the Lakeside County Park.

A lot of fishermen don’t know that winter is the ideal time to catch a double-digit bass. The lake record of 17.52 pounds was caught on a bitter cold day in February 1990. For some reason these trophy bass feed when the water temperatures drop to the 45-degree range.
