Spinning Rod & line for Jerkbaits

I know this will be a topic for opinions like belly buttons. Everybody has one. I have been throwing jerkbaits/ripbaits on bait casting tackle. As I have gotten older, I like the pendulum action that a spinning reel under the rod provides to make a long morning of jerking less of strain on my wrist and fore arm. Looking for recommendations for a rod in the $100-150 range, or less. And do you like flourocarbon, braid with a leader or ? And what pound test?

Hey Pat,

I primarily use baitcasters for Jerkbaits and last year I purchased a Fenwick Lunker Stick 7' Moderate fast glass rod - this thing casts a mile and is a great jerkbait rod - they make it in spinning and casting and the best part is it's under 100.00

I have also used the Phoenix Maxim Moderate Fast rod - would be good for smaller size jerkaits like the staycee and 110 the 200 + series may be a bit much on it. This rod has a good action for moving baits.

I caught my biggest jerkbait bass on a spinning rod, a Megabass Orochi Shakyhead. Not my usual rod for jerkbaits, but that was the only rod I had with me when fish started spraying and worming suddenly didn't seem like a great idea

Assuming that the rod action carries down into the lower models, the Levante Shakyhead might be a rod to consider. It's more expensive than what you're looking for and they're temporarily not available, but you get great wipping action, it loads deep into the blank, and handled the fish like a champ (had to play the fish for quite a while because of light line).

Oh also for line I use Stren Flurocast Flurocarbon - it’s 10.00-12.00 a spool a soft limp fluorocarbon Good wink rate, not great abrasion resistant but perfect for an open water spinning platform. Also a 3500 or 30 spool so you can get that long bomb cast. That Revo STX spinning is nice

A rod that I have started to use more often this past year is the Powell Endurance Spinning Rod 7'2" Medium Composite. This rod was designed for reaction baits and does a great job. It is a killer for throwing a size 90 Whopper Plopper with 20 lb. braid. As for rip baits I would use Sun Line CB fluro on a 3000 sized reel.

This will depend on which jerk baits your throwing. Let's just say it's a Vision 110 which is hugely popular bait. This bait does not have a big bill so it doesn't pull hard. You could get by with a 2 power spinning rod or a 3 power, which is Med Light in a 2 and Medium in a 3. It'll depend on the angler's preference on power. I never throw braid with a jerk bait. Both mono and floro will work, I usually prefer mono. Most all of us started with a spinning rod and when the technique was started it was all spinning in those days. If you use a stiffer line it'll jump off the front of the spool on the pause in the retrieve. You do not need a high dollar rod for this either. I would recommend one of my Colts in a 702SF or a 703SF. I'd give the nod to the 3 power. They retail at $79.99 and will work perfectly. THX!!!!
