Massive Trout at Oroville with Swimbait
Massive Trout at Oroville with Swimbait
The official weight on the certified scale at the Feather River Fish Hatchery was 25.25 pounds for the fish caught on May 22.
“The trout was 35 inches in length by 25 inches in girth, a truly amazing fish,” said Giordano.
Giordano caught the rainbow on a swimbait under a bobber. He was using a 10-foot 6 SST Okuma 10 to 20-pound line rod teamed up with a Helios 3500 series reel. He hooked the fish on 25-pound test Power Pro line, attached to a 15-pound Seagar leader.

Yeah it’s a great catch. Just wondering how they distinguish between a bow and steelhead
I think if the trout has access to the sea it is considered a steelhead.
What I do know is that steelhead grow giant at sea and return to the river like a salmon

Steelhead cannot access this area due to the dam at the hatchery. It’s a rainbow.

That is one crazy giant rainbow then!!!!
I didn’t think they could grow that big in freshwater. Could it possibly be a brooder from a hatchery?
Look at the tail. It’s edges are perfect unlike a trout from a hatchery.
Interesting catch

Beautiful rainbow, close to the state record wild rainbow trout.

It’s wild. Easy to get big and fat sitting in slack water eating dead minnows spit out by the turbines.Lawley wrote:Water_Dog wrote:Steelhead cannot access this area due to the dam at the hatchery. It’s a rainbow.

If it’s the same place I used to fish as a kid, landing anything out of that Zoo is an accomplishment.
Awesome Bow!

Nice catch! It's weird but I've been catching a lot of trout on bass gear the last couple years.
I was throwing a 6 in swimbait when a trout ate it. Got it to the boat and it got off but it was a giant.

I don’t know how it got there but I think it’s a steelhead

Very nice trout. Steelhead do not have a belly like that. As was said, getting fat on the turbine discharge.
Re: Massive Trout at Oroville with Swimbait
A simply great fish. Congrats!
Re: Massive Trout at Oroville with Swimbait
You can tell the difference between a trout and a steelhead by the number of splines/bones in their fins and the spotting pattern.
