BETHEL ISLAND – Ca. The California delta once again demonstrated why it is one of the very best “topwater frog” fisheries in the nation, as a legion of anglers converged on the massive river system to participate in the 6th annual Ultimate Frog Challenge (UFC6), a competition where anglers can only use “topwater frogs” to catch monster summertime bass.

Dominating the field, was the team of Billy Hume and Mike Kuhlman, who provided proof of just how incredible the delta fishery can be, as they almost tilted the scales with a 6-fish limit the weighed a whopping 30.16 pounds, earning them the UFC6 Championship title in the pro division, and $5,400 dollars in cash!

They indicated that the Snag Proof brand of frogs was the key to victory and also playfully explained that “GET THE NET” duties were equally divided, as both caught and good share of the fish that were landed.

Congratulations Billy and Mike…the newest members of the Gone Fishin’ Marine UFC Hall of Fame!

Team Daiwa wins crushes Am division

Father/son team Rick and Tyler Rush, representing team Daiwa, dominated the event’s am division performing well on BOTH days to grab at total weight of 19.66 pounds, their first UFC championship win, and $3,000 cash.

“Using the Ish’s Phat Mat Daddy frog by River2Sea - in the darker colors, completely made the difference and was the key to consistent “blow-ups” and “hook-ups” noted Rick, as he also credited the use of Daiwa’s Elite Series Tatula Frog rod designed by pro angler Ish Monroe, for their being able to drive hooked fish out of very heavy cover.

“This win is also EXTRA special, as I got to fish it with my son Tyler… who means everything to me”, he added.

Congratulations Rick and Tyler on a well-deserved victory!

Scum Frog wins the “Royal Rumble”

From “obscurity to the spotlight” is all that can be said about Scum Frog - the frog bait that won the event’s special “Royale Rumble” competition.

Always a special competition within the UFC6 event, this Royale Rumble saw 7 teams – selected by 7 different frog manufacturers, compete head-to-head for the coveted “Top Frog” trophy which is presented to highest finishing team - and the frog brand they represent.

The team of Huff, and Simpson took the “Top Frog” Royale Rumble title, edging out all competitors on the strength Scum’s new “Popping Frog”, a bait that makes just enough noise when twitched, to make bass commit to it.

The Scum Frog brand has been around for many years, but now under the direction of American Bait Works group, it has been redesigned and re-engineered to enhance its profile and performance, making it a “must have” for topwater frog fishing.

Daiwa Youth Division

The UFC6 Youth division – presented by Daiwa, was a ton of fun for the youngsters that participated, and young Brayden Vierra took home the special Daiwa Cup Youth trophy, along with $100 cash for the 4.24 pound largemouth that ate his top water frog offering.

Second and third places in this division received Daiwa Tatula rods and reels along with a custom medal for their efforts, and ALL youth participants receive great prizes from event sponsors such as Gamakatsu, Evolution tackle boxes, and Trigger Happy Comfort grips.

We are already planning for next year’s event UFC7, and hope that you will join us to help make it even more exciting than this year’s event!

A special thanks to Gone Fishin’ Marine, Lasher Elk Grove Ram, the crew down at Russo’s Marina, and especially to all the anglers that participated and have supported this event throughout the years.

Everyone enjoy the rest of the summer…and PLEASE...in all things, be safe!
