On Saturday 2/6/21, the American Bass Association (ABA) hosted their inaugural Kayak Series event in Southern California on El Capitan Reservoir in San Diego County approximately 30 miles northeast of the city of San Diego.
A full field of 50 anglers hit the water to see who would take home the title. Tournament Director Jon Demonet reported beautiful weather with sunny skies, a high of 75 and no wind. Water temperature was reported to be 56 degrees with 1.5 feet of water clarity. Fish were found early in 15 to 20 feet and then moved up to 5 to 10 feet as the water warmed throughout the day. The primary patterns were dropshot and neko rig on mud banks with rock clusters. The fish were reported to be keying in on the rock.

Ultimately, it was Tim O’Connor who was able to secure a five fish limit that measured 82.50 inches for the win. Big Fish of the tournament was an impressive 21.75 incher caught by Juan Nunez.

Here’s your top ten:
1. T. O’Connor – 82.50 inches
2. J. Demonet – 81.00 inches
3. J. Toscano – 79.25 inches
4. J. Ventura – 79.00 inches
5. A. Cox – 78.50 inches
6. B. Leppke – 77.00 inches
7. C. Kimbro – 72.25 inches
8. A. Anaya – 72.00 inches
9. K. Yang – 71.50 inches
10. R. Maciel – 71.00 inches

Next up for the ABA Kayak Series is Lake Hodges on Saturday 3/6/21. A full field of 50 anglers have already signed up for the event and they are now accepting anglers for the waiting list. “We are excited to see the growth in our sport and to provide an opportunity for kayak anglers to compete on a higher profile. We have great sponsors and we are looking forward to more opportunities as the circuit grows”, said Demonet.
