Tell Gov Newsom no... More water news from Restore the Delta

Post by mark poulson »

Today, Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla wrote:
"We fear that if Governor Newsom uses emergency powers to give San Joaquin Valley growers what they want, without consideration that the drought could be a multiple-year event, the Delta could be lost to HABs and remaining fish populations decimated. In the days ahead, we will be calling on all of you to tell Governor Newsom and California’s newspapers that during drought, protecting drinking water supplies for our neighbors, protecting Delta water supplies and waterways from HABs, and saving our rivers must be his first consideration. Almond trees are a luxury, not a necessity for California."

Now that the State Water Project succeeded to decimate and made the Delta Smelt extinct with their pumping the water out of the Delta, pump away! No more hurdles and court orders to stop the pumps with the Smelt out of the way.....

The only thing to tell Gov Newsome is what will be extinct next?

Good luck!

Mark go make a living fishing
Farmer work hard for what they have big or small farms
Again fishing is just a luxury
Just like any tackle business or boat dealership. You pay to go play. Feel free to move out of ca.
Gas prices will hit $5 plus by summer there another topic you'll gripe about when I get here.

Jiggin4bass, I'm not saying your wrong, but if I go buy some cheap land out where there's not enough water, plant an orchard, should I get subsidized water pumped to me? Isn't that socialism?

I agree, the land has sunk up to 28 feet, the roads are collapsing, bridges are next. Guess who they want to pay for all that? Yes, taxpayers while they make millions. it's about greed. No caring because it's about the dollar. They won't self control and want more. 80% was being shipped to China and India, sorry, I don't make a complete meal out of almonds and now have given up on those snacks.

I like the idea of moving and selling water it's good business. That part of it's here to stay. Big farming has the edge and always will have.

We've already been paying extra in taxes for fixing the roads and bridges (supposedly): Jerry Brown's SB1 gas tax. It's now been in effect about 3 and-a-half-years. What's been done with the $5 billion a year that pulls in? Hardly anything. And on that note, anyone know how Newsom's "investigation" into the mystery gasoline surcharge is going? Remember he promised one? Crickets! More reason to recall.
Fishing is not a matter of life or death.
It's more serious than that!

Right here..... not to mention water RIGHTS which are owned buy either irrigation districts or landowners, etc.

https://docs.vcrma.org/images/pdf/plann ... 3482-5.pdf

Like I’ve said before.... City people want to live in the valley on the cheap so they can commute to the Bay Area for higher wages.....when they build a tract of new houses they have to make sure they can get water from the city who either pumps it, buys it from a water rights owner, etc. So be mad at your city government (largely dumbocrat) politicians who agree to purchase the water at a high price.

So now you just burned up a ranch that had high quality soil and water for the benefit of cheap homes and access to the Bay Area...... now that farmer goes and buys whatever land is available.... to get water he either needs to pump groundwater (his RIGHT) or purchase it from an irrigation district or other owner of water. It’s called Called Capitalism and is responsible for the greatest country on earth.

Personally, I would tell those home developers to pound sand just like they are currently doing in the “Wood Colony” area of Modesto..... Farmers do NOT want to sell but Dumbocrat city government threatening eminent domain and chit.

To hell with them.... this state is over populated.... people can live somewhere else.... majority of our food cannot be grown anywhere else...... oh and PS..... the reason we grow so many almonds is because city people driving up land prices for subdivisions and commercial development..... forces farmers to grow the highest value crop....... oh yeah, Also tired of continuing to explain that a large majority of farmers run less than a couple hundred acres and usually work a secondary job to get buy.

You dummies that keep crying how all farmers are just like the Resnick guy and rolling in the cash would be like referring to all “Pro” fishermen being just like Van Dam or Iconelli.

Farmers may have water rights but they don’t have the right to decimate the environment and make its’ inhabitants extinct like what happened to the Delta smelt.

We all need to halt the extinction of this environments species, not promote it.

Good luck!

They Sure they do have that right..... wether it’s right or wrong is up for debate.....what have you personally done to change the status quo? Post here hoping someone else will do something? Donate a few bucks to a “ save the delta” type organization? Well that chit hasn’t worked and is not going to work.

We need to stop building homes and really anything on prime agriculural land..... keep it in the city....go vertical, infill vacant lots.....retrofit vacant buildings for other uses and keep it profitable..... low permit costs....minimum red tape...... then we can talk about incentives for farmers to grow more domestically benefiting crops. Capitalism and free markets work....problem is our politicians wether elephants or donkeys have been hard at work to stifle it over the last 50 years.

Amazon is building a frick'n HUGE warehouse on top of hundred year old Oxnard strawberry fields. Why not because it's $19.00 an hour to start and we will have more money in our pockets to purchase strawberries this way  I lived in Japan for a while as a kid. Try to live and eat off of 30% of the land sometime. That's right 70% of the land in the Land of the Rising Sun cannot be farmed or built on ( mountainous terrain ) so they cannot build on the Ag. areas as it would be like piss'n in your own bath water. Here in the great State of California we are shameful in greed. In an adjacent industrial site where the company I work for is located you can watch Casitas lake running down every street because of the landscaping needs.. The aquifers in the Pacific rim including India are tapped out. In some cases it's thousands of years to get that water down that far. I figure it won't be in my lifetime but it's not looking good for mother nature on the whole. To many humans... Me personally...I cannot fathom the fact that all that water that falls in this state and no new dams completed or started that I can think of ?

Give me a break with the move away or farmers have the right stuff...

Lot's of smaller family owned (California) farms grow dry crops. It's was basically the norm for centuries until the last 50 years or so. All sorts of crops can be grown this way, even almonds can be grown using less water. The food taste better as well. The problem is all of the big agro famers don't really care about the land or water that their irrigated crops consume. This is just a big cash play at everyone else's expense, it's the fruit fly mentality of using up all the resources.

Ok everybody stop whining about the farmers taking the water and go fishing
Soon you'll will have more the whine about when gas prices and Diesel prices hit $6.00 a gallon and your Bass boats and Rv and big trucks you pull your boat with will be
worthless. I can't wait for the new thread to start.

Dude, do I again have to explain what a “right” is? Everything you are complaining about is called capitalism ..... do you expect ANY business to NOT operate in the same fashion? I guess I don’t understand ....houses and industries were built here mostly WITHOUT water rights but an agreement to purchase water from water right owners .... Now that they have missmanaged urban sprawl and overbuilt based on phooey science and data but now it is the water rights owners who are at fault.... cracks me up.... sounds like F’in welfare ......” we deserve it” “it ain’t fair” “ gimme that”.

You're time is coming El Jefe. We saw it in the last election. Politicians do what they want be damned. Farmers will lose most of their water rights one day because piping water into homes makes a hell of a lot more money for cities then crops.
Farming is global now and most of the crops in grocery stores comes from outside the country year round. You are not growing food. Your growing nuts and shipping 90% of them out of the country. Farming is fine when you keep it in balance. Now anybody with some land that was never farmed before has become a nut farmer. Rolling foothills and deserts that should never have been farmed are being planted with millions upon millions of trees.

Hey...preaching to the choir man.... It’s a big azz tangled mess..... when guys are having to pay 40k an acre for land there is no way in hell that they can make any money with any crop except almonds or walnuts.... by politicians no matter what party opened up all of these export agreements (treaties) not sure but that drives up the price of almonds which drives up the price of land.... that’s what really pisses me off..... my “if you don’t like it then move” statement is kind of tongue in cheek..... what do you expect a farmer to do? He is going to plant a crop that will he can hopefully make a profit..... Fact, yes there are Mega Farm corporations... but most farmers are just normal guys trying to make a living.....same way as a guy in town who has to commute 80 miles a day to a factory to take care of his family..... I don’t expect him to close up shop and move either but I am simply trying to add some FACTS to these issues.... if you get all of your news from Mark Poulsen it will be slanted left.....same way if you get your news from the farm bureau it will lean right.... I don’t have the answers but I will point out the FACTS when they are not being represented truthfully.

To be honest this state that my family has farmed for 4 generations now is a lost cause..... I am 41 and can retire in 10 years....I will sell out and be gone.

Yes farming is a right but there is responsible farming and irresponsible farming. Giant almond plantations are irresponsible. Most of them are shipped out of this country. So you are saying it's our right to destroy the delta to grow excessive amounts of almonds that we don't benefit from? Can't eat almonds grown in California but sold in India. But hey some a-hole gets to line his pockets while destroying the land and the waterways. To me that's abuse.
