SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. —
A water system that may actually help usher the greater Sacramento region through this dry water year — rather painlessly — is often overlooked.

Water providers said most people think of Folsom Lake or the American River, the sources of water that can be visibly seen. Those bodies of water, however, only make up half of our water picture.

Groundwater also plays a vital role, and in a dry year like this one, we'll need to rely on it to a greater degree, according to water providers.

"We actually have a reservoir that's twice the size of Folsom underneath our feet," said Ryan Ojakian, legislative and regulatory affairs program manager for the Sacramento Regional Water Authority. "What we’ve been able to do over the last 20 years is really marry the surface water supplier operations with our groundwater supplier operations and by doing that, we've been able to put more water in the ground in wet years. That is what allows us to take more out of the ground in dry years like this."
