Yamaha or Mercury

I’m getting ready to order a boat in a couple weeks. Leaning towards ordering a yamaha on it. Just curious what the feelings are for one over the other.

I own an Evinrude and have never owned either the Mercury or the Yamaha. Word on the street is both are quality products. I've heard that pretty much every repair shop is qualified to work on a Mercury, Yamaha not so much. Think about who will be doing your repairs and whether or not they are certified to work on your motor so you don't have to drive to Timbuktu to get repairs done.

That's a tough one with both companies putting out some fierce 4 strokes. I think Monte stated it well that if your local service center is specialized in one over the other then that may be the swaying point. If it were me, I would lean into the Yamaha solely based on the fact that they have been in the 4 stroke game for some time without any big recalls or claims. But man that is a tight race, maybe a negotiating point on the total package if you can get Lowrance, ghost and merc for a combo deal discount that would be enough to change my mind.

I’m in Redding and take my boat now to Calvin at Redding yamaha for service so that’s not an issue.

Yamaha had a problem with the SHO. Free powerheads to any SHO owner for a while there. The 225 and 250 HPDI motors were crap as well. I'm guessing they got that bug figured out with the Sho's but who knows since this is the type of stuff you hear from Yamaha owners. When things go bad they go silent.
Same with Mercury owners. Opti's weren't that good either. Blown power heads, failed compressors, bad fuel rails, but if you hear the owners talk they're the cats meow.

Same goes for boats, fish finders, rods, reels, etc... Whatever they have is the best. lol
Bass fisherman and their ego's............

I would go with the Mercury since its the latest and greatest. If you want to get adventurous check out Suzuki.
