Good news for anglers in Southern California! Two of the three hatcheries that were affected by the Lactococcu garvieae bacteria last summer are now back online. Juvenile trout are growing and thriving in the raceways at Black Rock Hatchery and Fish Springs Hatchery (Inyo County) and the planting of those fish should begin in late fall. Fish-raising operations have not yet resumed at Mojave River Hatchery (San Bernardino County). Fish allocated for repopulation of Mojave River Hatchery are currently being held at Fillmore Hatchery in Ventura County until they can be fully vaccinated against Lactococcu garvieae, the disease that forced CDFW to euthanize more than 3 million trout and disinfect infected facilities.
To compensate for this loss CDFW has gone to great lengths to supply Eastern Sierra and Southern California waterways with fish from other parts of the state. Over the last 9 months, more than 1.5 million rainbow and brown trout have been reallocated and planted. It took more than 430 planting trips by truck to move that number of fish, and those planting operations continue.
