Yak-A-Bass (YAB) held their 2022 season opener in conjunction with Kayak Bass Fishing (KBF) Trail Series on Folsom Lake on 2/19 and 2/20/22. An impressive field of 100 kayak anglers came out for the YAB event, with 25 anglers registered in the KBF Trail Series events.

The weather was unseasonably warm and clear for mid to late February. Anglers were met with a tough bite (which has been the case all throughout CA for the past several weeks). In the YAB event, only 10 anglers were able to secure a limit (five fish) on day 1 and 14 on day 2. For the KBF events, 7 anglers on day 1 and 8 on day 2.

The big story was Chris Spencer of Orem, Utah who came in and swept the entire event securing the overall victory and biggest bags on days 1 and 2 in the YAB event and securing both KBF Trail Series events.

Spencer commented, “Leading up to the tournament, I had read some posts about the fish being line shy and difficult to catch. This told me that the fishery may be over-pressured. I have experience fishing pressured waters in Utah that are extremely. I rolled in on Wednesday and got on the water and covered about 3 miles with no fish and ruled that out. I got back on the water Thursday and hit another section and marked points of interest and only found one area with fishing moving through. On Friday, I covered another part of the lake and found some active fish high in the water column (by accident). I then dropped the drop shot on them and hooked up immediately. I knew that is where I was going to start on day 1. Tournament day I started out with the drop shot and caught my first fish. I had other fish turn away and then I switched it up and instantly caught a double. The Humminbird Solix downscan and the Chart Select Maps were key. I caught my limit in that spot. About 10AM, the wind stopped, the bite shut down and I didn’t catch another fish that day. On day 2, I started in the exact same spot (only this time with company) and it started off just like the morning before. Around 10AM, I finally caught my 5th. fish, the wind changed, and the bite shut off again. I looked around to see if I could pick the school of fish back up but was unable to. As the wind blew hard from the east it started stacking fish up on the east side facing drops on humps and I was able to cull 2 fish towards the end of the tournament. The key setup for me was the Donkey Rig. I’m looking forward to my next event Lake Roosevelt in Arizona.”
