California State Parks Temporarily Closes Brannan Island State Recreation Area

newsroom@parks.ca.gov

SACRAMENTO, Calif.— California State Parks today announced the temporary closure of Brannan Island State Recreation Area (Brannon Island),effective Friday, April 1, 2022.

Brannan Island is a maze of waterways through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Located northeast of San Francisco Bay, the park unit has countless islands and marshes with many wildlife habitats and opportunities for recreation, including boating and swimming. American Land & Leisure has worked with State Parks to operate Brannan Island since 2013 and has been operating on a month-to-month contract since 2018. AL&L informed State Parks that it was ending its operations on April 1, 2022.

Due to the remote location of the state recreation area, there are no resources within State Parks to keep it open. The department is actively seeking a new park operator.

Affected reservation holders will be contacted by the state’s reservation system – ReserveCalifornia.com – via email and provided with a refund. Reservation cancellations and refunds will be automatic.

For similar recreational opportunities in Sacramento and San Joaquin counties, please visit Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, Auburn State Recreation Area, Colusa Sacramento River State Recreation Area, and San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area.

State Parks reminds visitors to recreate responsibly as COVID-19 is still present. Prior to leaving home, visitors are asked to check the status of the park units they want to visit to find out what restrictions and guidelines are in place. Having a back-up plan in case their destination is crowded is recommended. For additional guidelines and safety tips, please visit parks.ca.gov/COVID19.

What will be a close by launch area with more than a ramp. Rio vista isn’t the greatest.

Sherman Lake and Hogback. Neither are ideal. Brannan has the best launch ramp in the delta.

What he said.
All of the ramps at Shasta are high and dry. Shasta Recreation (Forest Service contractor) is still charging $20 to launch on old Hwy 99 with parking on the rocks.
