Re: How best to test smoothness of a spinning reel??
Tolerances are indeed where smoothness both begins, and ends. There are a mess of reels out there that make the claim " 11 bearings", etc etc, and most people I speak with at shows and customers for that matter go right to that. But this reel mfgs spinning reel has 11 bearings, GREAT, irr...

Re: How best to test smoothness of a spinning reel??
I am sure Dan can attest to this, after cracking open reels its amazing what's inside a spinning reel and the short cut's manufactures take to get that value reel. For starters they pack em with grease and secondly the tolerances around the gears are for shite. If you cant get several rotations aft...

Re: How best to test smoothness of a spinning reel??
The other thing I look for in a Spinning OR Baitcasting is the smoothness of the DRAG !! That's really more important to me. Yes, I want smooth turning of the handle, and I want a few ball bearings, but the Drag is what I check 1st !! Drag is a slightly harder thing to test without actually getting...

Re: How best to test smoothness of a spinning reel??
I've had two RTX's for going on 3 years now, and don't have any issues like you describe. I'm not sure I could get the handle to spin on it's own 4 times, but they definitely are not hard to reel. They are the lightest, smoothest reel I've owned, and have held up excellent. Maybe this one came unde...

Re: How best to test smoothness of a spinning reel??
You have an issue. I'd return it, apparently they're not "just as good" a a Ci4.....Dan I don't have any experience with the Ci4, but from what I have heard, it is an amazing reel. Maybe I simply don't know what smooth means or how its measured, and that is on me, but I would say that the...

Re: How best to test smoothness of a spinning reel??
Sounds like the handle screw may be over tightened. Remove it and re-install it. Also, try taking the spool off and see if it spins freely. Check the tightness of the nut that holds the spool body to the reel. Or, it may just need some JetFuel on the gears. I have all Shimano and they spin very fre...

How best to test smoothness of a spinning reel??
Should a brand new spinning reel out of the box spin freely when you turn the handle? By this I mean should you be able to crank the handle firmly and have the reel turn over multiple times, ie more than two or three? I just purchased a new Okuma RTX online and when I took it out of the box, the ret...

Re: 20 Deep V Boat Owners - 150 Four Stroke Enough???
I have the Lund Crossover, which is 19ft length, 8 ft beam deep V, with the Merc. 150 four stoke, it is more than enough power. Max horsepower for my Lund is 175 hp but I'm happy with the 150hp. Don't know how much difference 25 more hp would give me. Your Targa is longer and maybe heavier but I th...

Re: 20 Deep V Boat Owners - 150 Four Stroke Enough???
I'm guessing that boat will top out in the low 40's. How fast are you looking to go? Length will play no part in top end speed. Width and weight combined will probably take a few mph off the top end with what your current boat gets. Heck, being its a new motor it might perform the same. That is wha...

20 Deep V Boat Owners - 150 Four Stroke Enough???
Just purchased a new Tracker Targa 20, which is a 20'2" long boat with a full 8 1/2 foot beam. This boat has a Merc 150 hp four stroke, which I have on a 19'6" long boat with an 8 foot beam and it worked great, but this new boat his heavier, wider and longer. I am thinking repower bef...

Spinning set ups for all bass fishing methods?
With the advancement in line technology (zero memory, thinner diameter, greater strength) and the advancement in gearing on spinning reels (higher retrieve rates and better drag systems), is there really a need to fish both spinning and bait casting applications or why one would choose bait casting ...

Re: Berkley Nanofil - Real or Hype??

Where I live in the northeast, we have a lot of crystal clear lakes where you could be fishing at just a...

Re: Berkley Nanofil - Real or Hype??
Thanks for the feedback. I have been fishing Trilene XL without really any issues, but I saw an ad for nanofil and the two things that jumped out at me were casting and zero memory, with zero memory being the biggest attraction being a spinning reel fisherman. In the end, I guess the old adage, if i...

Berkley Nanofil - Real or Hype??
I fish spinning reels exclusively and am always on the lookout for low memory line to minimize twisting and backlash situations. Berkley has a ton of claims with its new Nanofil line and I am wondering if anyone has tried it and if so, what their take/feedback is after having used it??

Re: Best Shimano Spinning Reel Ever Made
I have a Stella FI C2000s, Vanquish 2500XGS (JDM), Sustain FG 2500, and Stradic CI4+ FB 2500HGS (JDM). There is a marked difference in both smoothness and cranking power from the Stella to the other reels. The Vanquish isn't quite as refined as a stella, but has a CI4 rotor. For the money, I'd go S...

Dan, thank you very much for the reply. Your reference to quality of gear...

The reason for this question is to determine if its time for me to move into the 21st century with my fishing equipment. I am a diehard Shimano loyalist who has been fishing the original Japanese made Custom X and Speedmaster spinning reels. Love the rear fighting drags, great gear ratios and the ru...
