Re: 20 year experiment reveals why some largemouth bass are harder to catch
Larry Bottroff's original research on Florida Strain LMB in San Diego waters showed that they were inherently more difficult to fool than Northern Strain LMB. It could be argued that the birth of "finesse" fishing in the 1970's was the result of anglers trying harder to catch the Florida S...

Just a bump and a reminder that Chico locals should come to the "rigging party" tomorrow night [Thursday] at the Rod and Gun Club from 5 to 9 PM, as we re-rig and rehab the 600 loaner rods.

I know the turnout to help with the rigging and tackle rehab on Thursday night [May 30] will be good anyway, but just to sweeten the pot, Chico's "Hooked on Fishing" will have a free raffle for an Abu-Garcia Revo RVO3SX-HS for the volunteers who show up to do the work.

Volunteer "fishing coaches" needed in Chico June 1
Volunteer fishing coaches are needed in Chico on June 1, for the big "Hooked on Fishing" kids event. Depending on weather, we may have as many as 4,000 kids show up to catch their first fish, which totally overwhelms the ability of the Chico Bass Club and Chico Flyfishers to help each chil...

Re: Volunteer fishing coaches needed in Chico!
One other pretty cool feature is that if a kid catches and releases any of the resident largemouth bass that live in Horseshoe Lake, he/she gets a new rod and reel combo courtesy of the Chico Bass Club. That way the onslaught of kids has minimal impact on the local fish population, while we encourag...

OK guys, its that time again. The largest single-day children's fishing event in the known world is happening on May 21 [Saturday] from 7 AM to 1 PM at Horseshoe Lake in Upper Bidwell Park. We are definitely in need of as many "fishing coaches" as we can possibly get from the bass fishing ...

Unfortunately, camping is not allowed in Bidwell Park.
Nearest regular campgrounds I know of are at Lake Oroville, but there may be some RV parks in Paradise or even closer.

The only countries that prohibit line on carry-on reels are Panama, Brazil, and Costa Rica. There is absolutely no problem in Canada, the US, and Mexico. I fly approximately 50 times a year with line-filled reels in my carry-on [including yesterday], often on Southwest. A good tip to avoid the $50 e...

All, This year's "Hooked on Fishing, not on Drugs" children's fishing event in Chico was again a huge success. Attendance was around 25-percent down this year, about 3,000 kids instead of last years' record-shattering 4,100 kids. Not sure if the economy can be blamed because everything was...

To answer a few questions I have gotten via PM, we have plenty of loaner rods and extra tackle. The main duty you would have is showing kids how to put a nightcrawler on a hook, how to cast [mostly push-button gear], how to set the hook, and handle the fish when caught. Helping them hold it while pa...

Don't forget, carp are by far the world's most popular game fish. They are non-native to California waters, just like all freshwater bass species. Once any fish species becomes "bad" [especially non-natives], then its a slippery downhill slope from there. Stripers are now officially on the...

My guess is you shouldn't hassle it. Most likely these are pics of a large [but not a record] African [Giant] Tigerfish. The photos have been circulating the web with the incorrect caption "record piranha" for the "non-fishing" folks out there. Piranhas are also from South Americ...

Yes, you must use one of the "non-lead" brands of fishing sinker. We gratefully received a donation of several cases from Danielson, the makers of "Enviro-Quest" steel sinkers, which are working great for us. The bobber rigs work well early, and as long as the overcast holds, but...

Actually, it is a record. The listed record for carp in Lake Oroville is only 14-5, taken way back in 1983.
