After almost 40 years of fishing in winters, I've found that fleece GloMitts are the best option for me. They keep your hands warm even when soaking wet, and they flip back to expose your fingers when retying.

Do you have hydraulic steering? If so, make sure the system is bled properly. It's a great idea to just leave your cables in place on your hand control when you add a hotfoot to your boat. Mine are still hooked up; they just sit below the hotfoot cables inside the cowl.
