The transdcer can be mounted directly to the step of the transom if you've a Ranger 500 or Z boat. The jack plate is another option as drilling holes into the hull is not required. If you decided to mount the transducer to the step of the transom and need pic's send me a PM.

As noted above, you need to instruct the HDS unit on what chip you're using. There are several ways to get to this setting which is located under CHARTS.
Your manual under "START-UP" section describes how to set this up.
