I do a lot of drag upgrades on Daiwa reels. They make a good reel but the drags are poor. The customers are very happy with the Carbontex drag washers. I upgrade a lot of other brands of reels also.

Sounds like the Line Guide Pawl or the Worm Shaft is worn. It could be both. The line pawl is easy to change, but the worm shaft you ned to take the reel apart to change it.
