Yeah, hammer heads are a great bait. Ive caught fish, largemouth not stripers, on them on every lake Ive fished them and that does not include the Delta. They smell a little funny, but they are a great bait to have in your arsenal.

Well, my opinion is that its the guide that is not living up to his obligation. I had a similar experience years ago and to this day have nothing good to say about the professionalism of the guide in question.

Im not a fan of fizzing because 1) anytime you poke a hole in a fish you open a portal for infection and 2) anytime you are sticking a needle in a fish you run the risk of being slightly off and hitting a vital. You can use a baitknocker if you have one. My buddy has a baitknocker where the weight was sorta egg shaped. We took the chains off, and CAREFULLY slid the weight into the fishs stomach. By chance, did you grab the rubber leg material and pull it away from the body of frog, maybe when trying to clear weeds from the bait? If you do this exactly what you described will happen, and as far as I can tell, once it happens you cant fix it. At least I couldnt.

John, just launch at Kings Island because its free. The ramp is not the best, but neither are your other two choices. You have to approach the ramp at an angle. Since you have a boat the distance between Kings and H&H shouldnt be a factor.
