They won't do damage. But just like putting a magnet next to a compass, the Point 1 will not be able to provide accurate heading information if there is a magnet near it.

The waypoints are compatible but when they are saved on the Gen 2 to the SD card, they need to be saved in Version 4 or even Version 3. If you correctly set up a NMEA network, both these units can be connected to it and share waypoints. There is no waypoint sync and no editing of waypoints on one unit and seeing the changes on the other. Each unit must be on for the waypoint to share.

Ethernet cable between the two units is all you need to share, transducers, map cards, and waypoints. Any transducer can be viewed from any unit through Ethernet. The expansion port is for when you get multiple units and don't have enough Ethernet ports. HDS 7 Touch has one port each.

The only way to see if the mapping is better is to put her in and check it out. There should never be any issue just inserting a card into a reader. Especially a data locked card like a Navionics. Is your unit a Base Model or Insight model? I have found the Insight maps are just as good as Navionics...

You can do a quick Google search for non-ethanol gas in CA. Apparently there are only about 7 stations that sell non-ethanol gas. So even if you are buying premium it does have 10% ethanol in it. The state mandated it with the switch from MTBE.

If you are set on having SS up front, I'd get a Touch unit. Then you can connect the transducer directly into the unit. The price of a 9T with Structure is probably comparable to a 10 with LSS2.

Got a 2004 and have had issues but not excessive for the hours I've put on it. Compressor, trim motor, and reeds have all been replaced on my motor. But, I have over 500 hours on mine. I would not be afraid of a 2006 at all.
