the first thing you have to remember is that the motor is only as good as the power supply. but in your case with a 20 year old boat i would check the wiring, i'll bet your boat is wired with 10 or 12 gage wire. move up to 6 gage and the motor will be getting all the power it needs. plus the 55 draw...

Re: Trolling motor amps draw??
under no load conditions (on the bench) the motor should draw
about 4 amps. we are told not to worry about it until the motor
draws 8 amps or more. then there is a problem.
the boards are built for 200% over normal.

sorry, unless you want the aftermarket solution
that's all you have is to run it up the shaft.
a lot of my customers do it, and it works out fine.
you just have to watch your coil cord if you wrap
it 2 tight it will do the same thing.

i assume you have checked your batteries.
it sounds like you have water in the lower unit and your brushes
are freezing up in the open position. best get it fixed
before you blow your control board.

justflipit, i'd try adjusting the steering cable tension.
its on the bottom of your foot pedal where the cables go in.
right is tight.
if you get to much slop in the steering cables they will bind up
and break even being stainless steel.

i've upgraded with every new improvement to my 101 since
2001. 201pro is right. the same motor but a new style mount.
the thing is rock solid and very quiet.
the cost of the new mount is $580.00 and it takes about an hour to change over but the motor has to be off the boat.

we got out today and found nothing but 3#ers.
but on the way in we stopped and talked to a welder working

he told me they are building a water treatment plant.
i can only assume this is to treat water before it heads south.
sure would like to see the master plan.

pull your prop and make sure the shear pin isnt bent.
and there is no fishing line in it.
turn the prop by hand (with the power off)
and make sure it turns smoothly you should
only feel the armature going thru the magnets.
if that does'nt do it you'll have to bring it in.
