Square Bill Questions

Post by monte300 »

Hey folks, if you've been reading some of my posts you know I love to crank the Delta. One of my go to baits is the Luhr Jensen Speedtrap. However, there are times and tides I can't fish this bait. This spring I have tried both the KVD and the Bagley square bills and have found that both of them are lacking durability in the lip area. I used to think the Speedtrap was delicate until I tried these baits. Besides durability, the ability to crank fast without having the bait blow out is also important to me. I guess my last requirement is that the bait run more shallow than the Luhr Jensen. I've been looking into the Bandit and I'm wondering if it or other baits will meet my criteria?

Thanks in advance!

I use kvd river to sea and mostly lucky craft. I tend to lean towards lucky craft. but honestly if your plowing rip rap the bills on the lucky craft tend to break. have never broke one on a speed trap or kvd. for the delta its hard to beat a speed trap

How does the Lucky Craft act when you crank it fast?

The Lucky Craft BDS3 is great for cranking the Delta. I would also add the River 2 Sea Biggie Pappa to this short list.

I typically rotate BDS3, Speed Trap, Biggie Pappa. Check out DANS OUTDOORS he has some nice Lucky Craft type baits in delta colors that are killer and will steer you in the right direction!

Thanks fellas for your responses I never thought I would say it but the Speedtrap is proving to be fairly durable and flat out catches fish when I'm able to fish it.

Other options....more speedtraps..haha
Its my confidence bait out here. My other options are bomber model a or flat a. Flat a cant crank fast, especially with a moving tide.

I fish 30lb braid for crankbait (yeah, I know...). I control depth of speed trap by lifting or lowering the rod on retrieve. I can get it from 7ft to 3ft by just varying the rod position. Short shank trebles reduce the hangups as well.
