Bass Jumping to Catch Dragon Fly- What is Best Bait to Use

Post by jmorris32 »

Hello Everyone,

I live in Chico California and frequently fish California Park Lake. Recently I have noticed an insane number of dragonfly's in the area and the bass are going crazy for them! I can walk around the lake and see bass constantly jumping out of the water to catch dragonfly's. I was hoping I could get some advise on the best type of bait/lures to use to take advantage of this activity. Thanks!

Check out Arizona dragonfly color from roboworm depending on color of dragonflies might be perfect.Try dropshoting em around the top water action with various lengths of leader from 2ft to 6 inch. Or you can rig them weightless wacky or Texas rig on a spinning rod. Another good choice is a topwater popper in a color similar to the dragonflies coloring. I'd go with a Rio Rico but any will do.

I used to destroy dragonfly-eating fish with a Heddon Baby Torpedo in black. A small topwater prop bait seems to mimic the fluttering/wing sound dragonflys emit when they are struggling on the surface.

I observed the same thing you're seeing, only had that topwater on me and it was, GAME OVER.

Hope this helps!

The fish do this at a local lake near me. The most important aspect of fishing for these fish is getting the lure to them as soon as possible. I like a basic Magic Craw Swirl 420 Beaver on a 3/16 oz Texas rig. Make sure you can cast it a long ways to reach those active feeding fish quickly. At my lake the fish are in tules, so yoyo the Beaver shallow over a tule a couple times and you should get hit.

Years ago I fished Cal Park for bass that were hitting dragon flies on top. I found taking a Rapala original floater (size 7 I think) and cast on the ring as the bass surface. Just twitch the bait and they would hit it. Give it a shot.

Heard that this color was inspired by the Dragon Flies

I would try throwing a 1/4 buzz bait at those fish, black in color even a black and blue.

If they're jumping out of the water to catch them in midair, try the helicopter lure.

A dragonfly
I would rather jog home from my own Vasectomy than spend Saturday at the mall.

Two times in my fishing life I have caught bass that jumped up out of the water and grabbed a spinnerbait and I caught both....I guess they thought it was a dragonfly.
