IMMEDIATE EVACUATION ORDERS | Spillway Failure expected within 60 minutes

Evacuation orders for low levels of Oroville

OROVILLE, Calif. - An immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered.

A hazardous situation has developed with the Oroville Dam emergency spillway. Officials say that operation of the auxiliary spillway has lead to severe erosion that could lead to a failure of the structure.

Failure of the emergency spillway structure will result in an uncontrolled release of flood waters from Lake Oroville.

In response to this developing situation, DWR is increasing water releases to 100,000 cubic feet per second. Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream has been ordered.

DWR said there has been severe erosion on the emergency spillway, not the main spillway which was damaged by concrete erosion on Tuesday.

DWR officials are planning to increase water releases from the main spillway to 100,000 cfs so that no more water will come down the emergency spillway.

The main spillway can handle water flows up to 250,000 cfs.

DWR said the increased flows will further damage the main spillway.

The Sacramento Fire Department said the emergency spillway's failure could have downstream affects in Sacramento.

I have this sinking feeling dropping rocks, no matter with 10 or 100 helicopters, is like the little boy putting his finger in the dike. Anyone else? Water is so powerful, as footage of yesterday emergency spillway #2, and the destruction it made, showed.

Praying it's handled though, whatever the means.

I was wondering how the emergency spillway handled the overflow yesterday, did that major road below it hold up? Nope, and here are pics... and "the nightmare scenario at Oroville Dam that officials are fighting to prevent."

A few of the environmental groups(Sierra Club, Friends of the Feather) tried to get funding in the early 2000's to make sure that the structure built in the 60's was more fortified, and at least further tested to handle something like we're dealing with, today. MWD of So Cal squashed that quickly in the courts, as it would have been costly to do. The water districts in California are out of control with their water allocation's, attempts at water grabs, reselling the water to make millions and trying to shove these tunnels down our throats. This is just another example of a time where they have screwed the people of this state--and I wonder how much that will be publicized given their strength and political power.

We need to use this as a rallying call to band together even with those we may view as not always seeing eye-to-eye with us, and stop the MWD and water interests alike from further negatively impacting our lives with their future actions especially regarding their desired construction of the Delta Tunnels.
