Gamakatsu Heavy Cover Flippin' Hook - shrink wrap necessary?

Post by Ranger519v »

I've recently returned to the Gammie Heavy Flippin' hook as my punch hook of choice but that darn shrink wrap they put on the shank to cover the weld of the bait keeper fails EVERY TIME. Ends up just lying in the bend of the hook. I was going to try super glue but got to thinking - what is its purpose? Why not just cut it off the hook before use?

Anyone know of a reason to simply not cut it off?

I don’t hunk the 5/0 has one so I don’t see why it would be an issue to remove

So does anyone know? What is the purpose of the shrinkwrap?

Hey guys...

Bobby Barrack checked in on this one post to...

Bobby said “ It’s a great hook. It’s (punchin’) is such an abusive technique on tackle, you’re going to have some equipment failures. The shrink tubing holds the keeper, so it’s essential to this hook. When this happens:

Cut about 3/8 of an inch of shrink tubing. Clip one end in a 45 degree cut on shrink wrap, Thread tubing onto the hook . push that cut towards the eye of the hook. Make sure the cut is on the underside of hook, apply heat so the wrap adheres to the hook. That’s how I used to do it before I started using the GripPin 3X max.
