More than 2,000 pounds of live crayfish seized at border
ORT HURON, Mich. — More than 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms) of live crayfish were seized from a truck at the border between the U.S. and Canada, when a commercial hauler attempted to leave the United States.
The animals were red swamp crayfish, which are prohibited in Michigan and Canada. The crayfish burrow and create shoreline erosion; they also compete with native crayfish, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said in a written statement on the seizure. A Kalamazoo County lake was one of two places where the red swamp crayfish were first found found in Michigan.
DNR conservation officers in St. Clair County were notified July 13, 2018, that the red swamp crayfish were found when the truck was stopped while traveling from the U.S. at Sarnia, Ontario. The DNR said the truck originated in Canada and had been in Maryland and Arkansas to pick up its cargo.
