SHELDON, Iowa (KCAU) - A fish kill near Sheldon in August has been likely caused by a manure release.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources investigated a fish kill at the North Fork of the Floyd River about seven miles northeast of Sheldon in mid-August.
Julie Sievers, an environmental specialist senior at the DNR field office in Spencer, said that they investigated the fish kill after they were made aware of it when they received a call on August 18.
The DNR staff found dead fish going from the North Fork and a few miles into the Floyd River.
While water samples at the location of the fish kill were found to be normal, samples were taken from the water seven miles downstream where the water had a visible change in appearance.
They originally did field tests downstream, but have since gotten laboratory results. They say they found elevated levels of ammonia and E. coli.
