DWR Oroville Update

Post by WB Staff »

In response to updated forecasts that show upcoming dry weather, DWR began gradually reducing releases from the main spillway starting Monday, April 8th. At 1 PM today, flows down the main spillway will be reduced to zero. Releases from the newly reconstructed main spillway began at 8,300 cubic feet per second (cfs) on April 2nd and peaked on Sunday, April 7th at 25,000 cfs.

Releases over the past 10 days have provided adequate space in the reservoir to help provide flood protection. DWR's experts, state and federal regulators have concluded the main spillway performed as designed. Once the spillway gates close, a team of engineers will inspect and assess the spillway, and continue to monitor the instrumentation and share those updates with the regulators.

Due to the above-average snowpack, DWR anticipates additional releases from the main spillway this spring and summer as part of normal operations to manage reservoir levels.

UPDATE: For added clarification due to questions we have received - releases from the reservoir continue just not through the spillway at this time. Approximately 10,000 cubic feet per second is currently being released from Hyatt Powerplant. DWR will continue to manage lake levels with releases throughout the year.
