CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Of the most popular game fish in our area, more anglers would rather catch a trophy smallmouth bass than a trophy largemouth, catfish or crappie. That is according to our own unscientific survey, but I believe it is probably accurate.

1. Trophy smallmouth bass are highly coveted for a variety of reasons.
Their fighting ability. Smallmouth simply do not have "give up" in their vocabulary. Largemouth bass are well-known for their ferocious strikes but like heavyweight fighters, they simply lack the stamina of a smallmouth.

2. Trophy smallmouth are harder to find and catch. They do a total disappearing act in the warm months of the year. Because the best fishing for them is during cold weather, when fewer anglers are outy, many people simply don't know the best techniques to locate them.

3. They're less common in number and in availability.

With nearly 100 responses in the survey, trophy largemouth (10-pounds-plus) and trophy catfish (50-pounds-plus) came in dead-even. Catching a trophy crappie (3-pounds-plus) was bringing up the rear...
